As of October 2, 2007, we have acquired the property next door to ours. We are turning the house on that property into both a garage and a guest-house, which we are calling "The Coach-house".
We are calling the guest-house the "Hazelden MYOB&B", which stands for "Make Your Own Bed and Breakfast". Any of our friends (oh, alright, and family, too) can give us a call and stay over for as long as they wish. The guest-house currently has 2 queen-size bedrooms (we plan to furnish the other two bedrooms in the near future), two-and-a-half bathrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen. We have already had friends from the U.S. stay in the guest-house for a couple of nights, and we are looking forward to visits from family and other friends in December.
After 17 years of living without a garage, we finally have one! Originally, the garage for Hazelden was a separate building situated about 100 feet east of the main house. In the 70's, when the property was subdivided from about 2 acres (already subdivided in the 60's from the original 100 acres), that garage ended up on the lot next to Hazelden. Several attempts were made in the 70's and 80's to purchase the property from the new owner, but to no avail. The four-car garage (built in 1928 on stone barn foundations dating from before the 1890's) was still standing in 1988 when the new owner of the property demolished it to make way for his new house. While those old barn foundations are still there, we have decided to turn about half the main floor of that new house into enough garage space to hold at least 7 cars. We are planning to put in at least one lift and a lot of tools to fuel John's car collector hobby. Now that there is room, we may be able to purchase company for the Healey, Miata and BMW. The first order of business is to re-arrange the driveways to connect the main house with the garage. See the Pictures link for photos of the driveway construction. |
